Competition Tips

The 2011 DECA State Career Development Conference is right around the corner and you know what that’s time to go Above and Beyond! On behalf of the 2011-2012 State Officer Team, we want you to Aspire Higher in your competitive endeavors. So, we’ve compiled a list of helpful hints to help you during competition:

*Always maintain eye contact with you judge

*Give a firm handshake at the beginning of the role-play

*Utilize hand motions to regain your judge’s attention

*Do not change what you come up with during the role-play

*Visit a business that relates to your competitive event to see what it’s like

*Look online at websites of businesses that relate to your event

*Questions are your friend! Always answer them to the best of your ability--they can earn you extra points you may have missed

*Take practice tests

*Make use of the explanations with answers in the back

*Go over notes taken in class

*After reading a question, think of the answer before looking at the options

*Research your topic online

*Always answer every question

*Think about how the question relates to the real world

*Take as many practice tests as you can

Competition is never easy. Whether you’re a newcomer or an experienced veteran, DECA competition can be challenging, but rewarding for those who study and prepare. Study your materials, practice, and set your goal for making it to Salt Lake City. Good luck to everyone this year and be excited to go Above and Beyond.

We’ll see you on stage.
