Emerging Leader Summit Recap

Emerging Leader Summit Recap

The Oregon DECA State Officer Team was given the incredible opportunity to attend the Emerging Leader Summit in Chicago, Illinois from July 7th through July 9th. Aside from excursions to the famous Bean and the Skydeck Chicago, the team spent long hours in workshops hosted by DECA, networking with fellow state officers, and drafting plans for the coming school year. The conference had notable training appearances from the Army’s ROTC program, leadership trainer's Rhett Laubach and Ryan Underwood, and Oregon’s very own Karissa McDowell and Curtis Haley. The officers even had the opportunity to eat at an etiquette luncheon where we learned about the intricacies of professional dining so we can use these skills as we interact on behalf of Oregon DECA.

Attending workshops in the EMPOWER track, the team worked on developing our leadership skills, learning how to empower other leaders in our community, and facilitating effective chapter visits and workshops. While the state officer team was the only group from Oregon to attend ELS, the conference also hosted a separate content track called ELEVATE. ELEVATE is designed for chapter officers and leaders (like you!) and covers content related to managing members, preparing students for competition, and best practices for honing leadership skills.

All members of the officer team were engaged on social media, including Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, and you can find their journeys at ELS saved on those respective platforms. The team is taking everything we learned at ELS and implementing it for a successful 18-19 school year with YOU! Interested in attending ELS next year as a state officer or a chapter officer? Contact any state officer on social media, your chapter advisor, or refer to deca.org for more information! We can’t wait to see you at a chapter visit, the Oregon Leadership Institute, a district skills competition, or at SCDC this coming year!
