November is DECA Month! Here are a few facts about how DECA came to be one of the largest career technical student organizations with over 200,000 members worldwide.
DECA was founded in 1946 and started out standing for Distributive Education Clubs of America. Since then, the acronym no longer applies. DECA had its first interstate conference in 1947 in Memphis, Tennessee. A few years later, Oregon DECA was founded in 1955. DECA has continued to grow to different countries and has even started a collegiate DECA in recent years, creating a steady increase in membership!
DECA’s inner four points of the diamond represent the purpose of DECA’s comprehensive learning program, which are to integrate into classrooms instruction, apply learning, connect to business and promote competition. The outer four points on the DECA diamond represent what DECA prepares the next generation to be. DECA hopes tomorrow’s leaders will be academically prepared, community orientated, professionally responsible and experienced leaders. In addition, DECA’s core values and attributes are competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork.
To celebrate DECA’s amazing accomplishments, November has been declared DECA month. Be sure to participate in the DECA Month social media selfie challenge!
