Competition Tips for Individual Role Plays

It’s that time of year again! DECA competition season to be specific. As our State Career  Development Conference is approaching us, we hope this article helps you as you prepare for your roleplay event. This article specifically will be concentrated on helping you excel in your individual roleplays.

DECA, Inc. has over 55 competitive events that contain three key ideas. Each of these events have been categorized into the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, hospitality and tourism, as well as personal financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Individual roleplay events are focused on simulated situations that involve an allotted 10 minutes of preparation prior to a 10 minute presentation to your judge. If you have not yet had the opportunity to pick your roleplay, follow this link for a list of all roleplay events: https://www.deca.org/high-school-programs/high-school-competitive-events/

Now, it’s time to get started with tips and tricks for your roleplay!

One of the most important components of your roleplay are performance indicators. A performance indicator is used to measure and evaluate knowledge of a specific skill. In a DECA competition, the judge uses both general and specific business and marketing skills as performance indicators to evaluate the competitor. For example, “Describe the uses of grades and standards in marketing.”

The majority of your score is made up of your knowledge of the performance indicators. For this reason, it is extremely important that you address each performance indicator. Prior to competition, spend as much time as you can PRACTICING! Here, you can find a comprehensive list of all the performance indicators: https://tinyurl.com/DECAPerformanceIndicators
