On February 12, the Oregon DECA delegation elected six members to represent them at the association level. These six members, more commonly known as the Oregon DECA State Officer Team, represent Oregon DECA year-round at many conferences such as SCDC, ICDC and OLI. But did you know the State Officers are also representing DECA on Capitol Hill by advocating for Oregon DECA, and Career and Technical Education (CTE)?

From July 9-11, the Oregon DECA State Officer Team was in Washington D.C. advocating for DECA and the other Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs). The State Officer Team presented in the offices of Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley, Rep. Bonamici, and Rep. Defazio to ensure our Oregon legislators understand the importance of CTSOs and CTE funding. While presenting to the Senators, Representatives and other office personnel, the Officer Team focused on the impact DECA has on its members and the importance CTSOs have in molding future career pathways. Each presentation started by explaining why DECA exists and the purpose the organization serves. Then, the presentation shifted toward the effects DECA has on its members. From statistics, such as, “more than 90% of DECA members say their experience has empowered them to be an effective leader and connected school to the real world” to personal stories, such as, “Why we joined DECA” the Oregon DECA Officer Team truly wanted the Senators, Representatives and staffers to understand how much DECA means to us and how much it helps each individual grow. Finally came the last main point, discussing the “Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act,” more commonly known as the, “Perkins Reauthorization Act.” The State Officer Team explained why the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act needs to be passed and how it would play a vital role helping the members of DECA succeed.

Your State Officers had an amazing time advocating for the organization we love on Capitol Hill. Whether it’s in Washington, D.C., Salem, or maybe even a little closer to home, the State Officer Team is always advocating on behalf of the organization that we all love. In the fall, we will even have a great new way for members to get involved in advocacy so stay tuned for more updates.
